What is dementia?
Dementia is a condition that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. People with dementia often experience memory loss and may struggle with problem-solving, language, or behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is a common cause of dementia. While there is no cure, early detection and treatment can help manage symptoms and enhance quality of life.
What are the risk factors for fall and dementia?
Falls are more likely as we age, especially with muscle weakness, vision or balance issues, certain medications, and home or environmental hazards. Dementia risk increases with age, a family history of the condition, and risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
Who should consider screening for fall risk and dementia?
Screening is recommended for anyone with risk factors, particularly those over age 60. Identifying these risks early can help individuals take proactive steps to protect their health.
Why is screening for fall risk and dementia important?
Early detection of fall risk helps prevent injuries like head trauma and fractures. Identifying dementia early allows for symptom management, can slow progression, and improves quality of life for individuals and their families.
How often should I be screened for fall risk and dementia?
After an initial screening, it’s helpful to follow up every six months to a year. This regular check-in can track any changes and support early intervention if needed.
How do the virtual assessments work?
Our healthcare professional will guide you through a virtual consultation over video call. You can use a laptop or smartphone with a camera and a stable internet connection. Depending on the assessment, you may be asked to perform certain tasks on camera, like squatting or lifting objects.
What languages are available for the consultation?
Currently, we offer consultations in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese.
Do I need someone with me during the consultation?
Yes, as some examinations may require assistance.
What should I prepare before the consultation?
Place your device on a stable surface, like a table, and sit comfortably. Specific items may be needed depending on the assessment, which will be informed to you before the consultation.
Is the telehealth consultation secure?
Absolutely. Angsana prioritizes your privacy and uses a telehealth platform with industry-leading encryption standards to ensure your data remains secure.
What should I expect from the Memory Assessment?
The Memory Assessment takes about 1.5 hours. It begins with a private consultation with a family member (without you) for 30 minutes. Then, our healthcare professional will spend 45 minutes with you, asking questions and conducting memory tests. In the final 15 minutes, they’ll review your results and discuss next steps with you and your family member.
Will I receive a formal report for the Memory Assessment?
Yes, you’ll receive a detailed report by email within 48 hours of your consultation. This report includes scores for each memory test, a summary impression (such as normal, mild cognitive impairment, or dementia), and recommendations, including resources for further support if needed.
Can I share this report with my doctor?
Absolutely. The report serves as a reference or referral letter and includes your assessor’s name and Angsana’s contact details should your doctor need clarification.
Who conducts the Memory Assessment?
The Memory Assessment is conducted by registered medical doctors trained by our academic partner ACT4Health and the Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center at Washington University.
What is Virtual Brain Exercise?
Virtual Brain Exercise was developed based on the principles of cognitive stimulation therapy for people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia. It offers weekly, 45-minute interactive sessions tailored to each participant, providing guided brain exercises and social companionship. Led by an Angsana Trainer, these virtual sessions include memory exercises, reasoning tasks, word games, and number puzzles, all customized for the individual.
What are the benefits of Virtual Brain Exercise?
Participating in VBE can help seniors:
- Boost memory, concentration, and mental agility through weekly guided exercises.
- Enjoy social interaction in a supportive virtual community.
- Stimulate the mind with fun, brain-challenging activities, all from the comfort of home.
What equipment do I need to participate in the sessions?
You’ll need a smartphone, tablet, or laptop with a camera, along with a stable internet connection for smooth virtual sessions.
Can family members join the sessions?
Yes, family members are welcome to observe or join sessions, especially for the initial introduction, to better understand how VBE works and support ongoing participation.
Is Virtual Brain Exercise different from doing brain puzzles like Sudoku, or my usual activities?
While Sudoku and similar brain games can be helpful, Virtual Brain Exercise offers a more comprehensive approach. It combines various brain exercises that target multiple cognitive skills, such as memory, reasoning, and focus, in a structured way. Plus, it includes live guidance and interaction with a trained Angsana professional, offering motivation, companionship, and tailored support to make each session enjoyable and beneficial.
Can Virtual Brain Exercise cure dementia?
Virtual Brain Exercise is not a cure for dementia, as there is currently no cure for this condition. However, regular brain exercises and social engagement have been shown to support cognitive health and improve quality of life. VBE can help maintain mental sharpness and promote well-being, even if someone is experiencing memory challenges.
Do I need to have a memory condition, like mild cognitive impairment or dementia, to join Virtual Brain Exercise?
No, Virtual Brain Exercise is open to all seniors who want to keep their minds active, whether or not they have a memory condition. Many seniors join as a preventive measure to stay sharp, while others may already experience memory concerns. Virtual Brain Exercise is designed to suit different cognitive levels and is a welcoming space for anyone looking to maintain or enhance mental agility.
What should I expect from the Fall Risk Assessment?
The Fall Risk Assessment takes about 1.5 hours. It includes a variety of questions and tests to check for fall risk factors, including memory, blood pressure, social support, quality of life, mood, and mobility. A family member’s assistance may be needed for some parts of the assessment.
Will I receive a formal report for the Fall Risk Assessment?
Yes, you will receive a report via email within 48 hours. It includes scores for each assessment component and recommendations, which may include preventive measures, lifestyle changes, or a referral for further evaluation. For those with high fall risk, we may also offer a virtual Home Hazard Assessment to identify and reduce fall risks in your environment.
